There are several simple crochet stitches that can add such great texture to any crochet project. I am going to share my top three. All are simple enough for even someone new to crochet.
Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet Stitches
Using the front post and back post double crochet stitches give any project such a great texture. The result is a cable look. I use these stitches in some of my favorite patterns. I use the front post and back post double crochet in The Chloe Blanket. These crochet stitches create the look of beautiful cables giving this blanket such a great texture.
The front post and back post double crochet stitches are easy stitches to learn, even for someone brand new to crochet. Instead of inserting your hook into the loops of the stitch, you work around the post of the stitch. You either work from the front to the back around the post or back to front. See the video below for a quick tutorial.
Stitch Descriptions
FPdc: Yo, insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the next st (so that the post is in front of your hook) yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo and pull through remaining 2 loops. BPdc: Yo, insert hook from back to front to back around the post of the next st (so that the post is in the back of your hook) yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo and pull through remaining 2 loops.
Bobble Crochet Stitches
The bobble stitch is another one of my favorites. This stitch is worked on the “wrong” side of your pattern and worked as a cluster. The end result is great little bobbles that make any project a show stopper. I have used bobble crochet stitches in many of my pillow patterns such as The Lone Pine Tree Pillow, Peace Out 2020 Pillow, The Sweetheart Pillow, and The Pumpkin Patch Pillow.
Stitch Description
Bobble stitch: *Yo, insert hook into stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops; repeat from * in same st until you have 6 loops on your hook. Yo, pull through all 6 loops.
Back Loop Only Crochet Stitch
Another one of my favorite ways to create texture is by crocheting in the back loop only. I specifically love doing the half double crochet in the back loop of the stitch only. This creates a wonderful ribbed appearance. I love using this stitch because it is so simple and works up so quickly. I used this stitch in my Piper Rainbow Blanket.
Below you can see exactly how to complete the half double crochet in the back loop only.
